WHAT IS AODA?

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) applies to all public and private organizations who do business in Ontario, Canada, requiring websites and apps to be accessible by 2021. Recognizing the history of discrimination against persons with disabilities in Ontario, the purpose of this Act is to benefit all Ontarians by:

  • Developing, implementing and enforcing aoda accessibility standards in order to achieve accessibility for Ontarians with disabilities with respect to goods, services, facilities, accommodation, employment, buildings, structures and premises on or before January 1, 2025.
  • Providing for the involvement of persons with disabilities, the Government of Ontario and representatives of various industries and economic sectors in the development of the accessibility standards.
An estimated 1.85 million Ontario residents have a disability. That’s over 15% of the population (40% of people over age 65) and 1 in 7 people—which is expected to increase to 1 in 5 over the next two decades, as the population continues to age.
